A 20 kg dog eats about 8.7 kg (19 lb) of dry food a month on a typical adult food — roughly a 19 lb bag every month, or a 40 lb bag every two. A small 5 kg dog gets through about 3.1 kg (6.8 lb), and a large 40 kg dog about 14.7 kg (32 lb). The number you need for shopping is weight, not scoops.
This is the shopping-list version of the feeding calculation: daily calories × 30.44 days, divided by the calories in a pound of food.
At 3,700 kcal/kg (about 1,680 kcal/lb) and a neutered adult dog of typical activity (1.6 × resting energy):
| Dog weight | Daily kcal | Monthly kcal | Monthly food | Monthly food |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 5 kg | 374 kcal | 11,400 kcal | 3.1 kg | 6.8 lb |
| 10 kg | 630 kcal | 19,172 kcal | 5.2 kg | 11.4 lb |
| 20 kg | 1059 kcal | 32,243 kcal | 8.7 kg | 19.2 lb |
| 30 kg | 1436 kcal | 43,702 kcal | 11.8 kg | 26.0 lb |
| 40 kg | 1781 kcal | 54,226 kcal | 14.7 kg | 32.3 lb |
Calculated as 70 × kg0.75 × 1.6 for daily energy — the same equation used in the feeding calculator — then × 30.44 days, divided by the food’s kcal/kg. A food with a different calorie density changes the weight you buy, not the calories your dog needs.
Three related but different questions, three pages:
Once you know the monthly weight, buying is easier to plan:
Count treats and toppers inside the monthly total rather than on top of it, or the bag quietly runs out early.
Does a puppy eat more than an adult of the same weight? Usually yes, and it changes month by month — see puppy feeding amounts. The monthly figure here is for a stable adult.
My dog is on a weight-loss plan — does this still work? Yes with a different multiplier. See weight loss; the equation is the same, run at a lower factor.
Should I buy the biggest bag to save money? Only if it stays fresh — see shelf life and storage. For a small dog, a big bag can go stale before it is finished.
Planning by the bag? Dry dog food in bulk on Amazon — check the kcal/kg against the table above first, because a denser food means fewer kilograms a month.
