Why puppies need three times the resting energy

An adult dog of typical activity eats about 1.6 times its resting energy requirement. A puppy under four months eats about three times. That is not a rounding difference — it is nearly double, and it is the single largest multiplier in the whole calculation. The whole calculation, in one line

Every feeding amount on this site comes from the same two steps. First the energy a dog would need completely at rest:

So a 10 kg puppy under four months needs about 1,181 kcal a day, and a 10 kg neutered adult of typical activity needs about 630 kcal. Same weight. Nearly double the food. Feeding the puppy the adult amount for its weight leaves it short by about 47% — which is the largest single error a weight-only chart can make.

Where the three times comes from

It is not one thing. Three separate costs stack up:

Growth. A puppy is building bone, muscle and organ tissue that did not exist a month earlier. That construction work is energetically expensive, and it is the largest of the three. This is also why the multiplier is tied to the rate of growth rather than to a birthday — a breed that takes eighteen months to finish growing spends longer in the higher brackets than one that finishes at nine.

Thermoregulation. Heat loss scales with surface area, and surface area falls relative to volume as an animal gets bigger. A small body loses heat faster per kilogram, and has to burn energy to replace it. The same effect is why a Chihuahua eats more per kilogram than a Great Dane.

Activity. Puppies do not exercise in steady state. They run until they stop, several times an hour, which averages out higher than an adult's controlled walk.

Note what is not on that list: being young is not itself expensive. A young adult at the same activity level costs what an adult costs. The multiplier is high because the animal is building itself, and that stops when growth does.

Where owners get caught: the 9-to-12-month trap

Growth slows before it stops, and appetite does not slow with it. That mismatch is the most common feeding error in a dog's first year, and it is worth seeing the arithmetic.

Take a dog at 10 kg. At four to twelve months it sits in the 2.0× bracket and needs about 787 kcal, or 234 g of a 370 kcal-per-cup food. Once growth finishes it moves to the adult bracket at 1.6× — 630 kcal, or 187 g.

The requirement drops by 20%. But an owner who keeps scooping the same amount has not cut anything: the dog is now eating 25% more than it needs, every day.

The percentage depends on which direction you measure it. A drop from 787 to 630 kcal is a 20% reduction in requirement and a 25% excess in intake, and both statements describe the same pair of numbers. The dog will not tell you. Appetite stays high through the transition, and a puppy that was correctly fed at ten months can be a little overweight at eighteen months without any single week looking wrong. The defence is the same as everywhere else on this site: weigh the dog, recalculate whenever the life stage changes, and check body condition rather than the bowl.

Why the ceiling matters more in large breeds

For a small breed, being a little generous with a puppy is a minor problem. For a large or giant breed it is a known risk, and the evidence points one way:

A long-running study in Labrador retrievers kept two groups of littermates at different body conditions. The group fed 25% less stayed lean, lived a median of 1.8 years longer, and developed osteoarthritis later than the group fed more freely. The important detail is that the lean group was not underfed — the freely fed group was overfed, and it was the group that looked normal.

Rapid growth and excess calories are also associated with developmental orthopaedic problems in large-breed puppies, because the skeleton is still forming and extra weight loads joints that have not finished ossifying. That is why large-breed growth formulas exist, and why they control both energy density and mineral balance rather than simply being “puppy food for bigger dogs”.

Practically, this means the puppy multiplier is a starting point and a ceiling, not a target to reach. Feed to the lower end if the puppy is gaining faster than its growth curve, and judge by body condition: ribs felt under light pressure without being seen, a visible waist from above.

Kittens are not the same shape of curve

Cats do the same thing with smaller numbers and a shorter window. A kitten under four months sits at about 2.5× resting energy, against a puppy's 3.0×, and both drop to about 2× between four and twelve months.

The reason the kitten figure is lower is not that kittens grow less — they grow fast. It is that they finish sooner. A cat reaches adult size in about a year on a much shorter growth curve, where a Great Dane is still growing at eighteen months. A shorter high-multiplier window is the whole difference.
